PHILIPPIANS: OMNICIRCUMSTANTIAL GRACE
Philippians 2:12-18 :: Therefore..work..for it is...
March 9th, 2010

12a
 Therefore,| my| beloved,| as| you| have| always| obeyed,

12b
 so| now,| not| only| as| in| my| presence

12c
 but| much| more| in| my| absence,

12d
 work| out| your| own| salvation| with| fear| and| trembling,

13a
 for| it| is| God| who| works| in| you,

13b
 both| to| will

13c
 and| to| work

13d
 for| his| good| pleasure.

14
 Do| all| things| without| grumbling| or| questioning,

15a
 that| you| may| be| blameless| and| innocent,

15b
 children| of| God| without| blemish| in| the| midst| of| a| crooked| and| twisted| generation,| among| whom| you| shine| as| lights| in| the| world,

16a
 holding| fast| to| the| word| of| life,

16b
 so| that| in| the| day| of| Christ| I| may| be| proud| that| I| did| not| run| in| vain| or| labor| in| vain.

17a
 Even| if| I| am| to| be| poured| out| as| a| drink| offering| upon| the| sacrificial| offering| of| your| faith,

17b
 I| am| glad| and| rejoice| with| you| all.

18
 (Likewise)| you| also| should| be| glad| and| rejoice| with| me.

2:12-18 tease out the implications of what precedes it. How does that work, exactly?

The "therefore" of Philippians 2:9 is not an encouragement for us to use humility as a means to win the world's approval. The "proper time" of 1 Peter 5:6 is not when that promotion is coming up, or when the starting QB will be named, or when the class valedictorian gives her graduation speech.

Humility for the sake of worldly advancement is an expression of selfish ambition and vain conceit, and perhaps the proudest one at that. If our humility is to be anything like our Savior's--and it emphatically is, Phil 2:5--then it is much more than a strategy. The humility that Jesus exemplified was one that led him to His death.

The exaltation came three days later. The exaltation of Jesus was His vindicating resurrection. It was when God declared Him as the victorious Son over sin and death. It wasn't a salute from Pilate, or the climatic regret of the Pharisees. The mock-absorbing, hate-embracing humility of Jesus lasted until His dying breath and buried body.

Why would we think ours would be different? "Have this mind among yourselves…" This mind! The last day is the "proper time." The resurrection is where we'll be 'exalted.' It is unto that day that we, by grace, "count others more significant" and "humble ourselves before the mighty hand of God."

There is some good food for thought here. May we dwell over this text.

13d's Purpose arc is to 'underline' its significance. Think about what Paul is saying...
we are creatures of grace!
These are the implications of 2:1-11

12b and 12c could also be represented by -/+.

The A is meant to show the contrasting circumstances that require the same action of 12d
The A means to express that even in the circumstance of Paul's martyrdom, he is rejoicing because of the Philippians' faith (16)
v. 18, "to de auto kai" translated as "likewise you also" shows the relation between the Philppians' rejoicing to that of Paul's.
Paul suggests that since he is rejoicing, then the Philippians should rejoice, too. This is represented by the If/Th
