NOTE: I plan on re-doing this one and adding more verses. This one will be deleted soon. John points out that there are many antichrists who have already come, and more will come in the future. These antichrists are a part of the visible church (a mixture of true converts and false converts), but they left the church which reveals that they were never truly a part of the invisible church (true converts only). John points to the true converts and says that they are anointed by the Holy One and have knowledge. The Greek word behind "have knowledge" can also be translated as simply "know." John appears to be contrasting the true converts from the antichrists by implying that the antichrists were not anointed by the Holy One and do not know. Know what? Verse 21, which this arc does not cover, uses the same Greek word in the context of knowing the truth, so most likely John is referring to the truth in verse 20. Thus the antichrists are not anointed by God and do not know the truth in an intimate, real, experiential way. They only know about the truth, but are not transformed by the truth. Now the antichrists whom John was referring to that have already come were in the church, but left the church. Whether this means the final antichrist will be someone who appears to be in the church, or someone who can come from outside the church, is not explicitly states. Maybe John was just saying the current antichrists were from the visible church, or maybe John was implying that all antichrists would be from the visible church. In the next segment of the letter, it seems that antichrists refer to anyone who denies the Father and/or the Son, both in the church and outside the church. We will look at that later. NOTE: This is not my official commentary on the passage, so this may be replaced later when I produce a full commentary on this passage.
