notes
Main point summary
Paul now turns to the subject of false teachers, commanding Timothy to remind those in his charge of the truths in this letter. Timothy is to be diligent to properly using the word and avoid false teachings like those spread by Hymenaeus and Philetus. Although these two have gone astray, and others have been upset be them, God knows His children, and they remain faithful.

Three imperatives: v14a remind v15a be diligent v16a avoid
The participle may be adverbial, i.e., the means of how Timothy is to remind them. However, I have chosen to see it as a further command.
This is one of the results of wrangling about words.
This may refer to the previous passage regarding the gospel or even the whole content of the letter.
V14 appears to be a bridge verse. It is a conclusion of the pericope v8-13 but also relates to v15-19 which deal with false teaching.
The logic here appears to be that although some have turned away from the faith and others have had their faith upset, God knows His true children and they remain faithful.

Things to Advocate
Remind them of these things,
and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words,
which is useless
and leads to the ruin of the hearers.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God
as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,
accurately handling the word of truth.
Things to Avoid
But avoid worldly and empty chatter,
for it will lead to further ungodliness,
and their talk will spread like gangrene.
Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
men who have gone astray from the truth
saying that the resurrection has already taken place,
and they upset the faith of some.
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal,
“The Lord knows those who are His,”
and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”
