When Herod hears about Jesus. he thinks John the Baptizer has risen from the dead. Mark then recounts John's martyrdom. Herod had John imprisoned because John had reprimanded him for marrying his brother's wife, Herodias. This caused Herodias to want to put John to death. When Herod's birthday arrived and he threw a big party, Herodias' daughter (or Herod's daughter - the text is not clear) danced in such a way as to entice Herod to grant her a wish. Instructed by her mother she requested the head of John on a platter, which she then received. John's disciples then came and buried John's body.

καὶ περίλυπος γενόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς ἀνακειμένους οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἀθετῆσαι αὐτήν·
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀποστείλας ὁ βασιλεὺς σπεκουλάτορα ἐπέταξεν ἐνέγκαι τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ τὸ κοράσιον ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦλθον καὶ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτὸ ἐν μνημείῳ.
