Radical Service to the Heavenly Father 5:11 " Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me . 5:12 " Rejoice and be glad , for your reward in heaven is great ; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 5:15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 5:16 " Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Introduction: Why does Jesus call His listeners "blessed"? What does He mean when He says "rejoice and be glad"? Why is it important to be the salt and the light in the world? A. Jesus calls upon us to be radical towards to the world. Rejoice and be glad when persecuted because of Jesus (This is not a terrorist kind of radical, which is actually a common thing today.) God's children interact unexpectedly and vividly with the world. Self-denying children of God commit to Christ. They get persecuted in His name; not in the name of their selfishness. They are completely devoted to their Master. We are not pioneers; prophets have walked this path before us. God is just - He prepared a great reward for those who suffer for the sake of His glory. God cares for His children - He left us encouraging examples. God exists outside of time - His sheep always act the same way. B. In God, our only purpose is to be radical - "Do or do not, there is no try." The salt has a natural quality of being salty. If the salt would lose its saltiness then it would be like sand or dirt - useless. The city on a hill is immovable, obvious and exposed: it can't be otherwise. The candle has only one purpose - to burn and to give light. That is what it is made for. C. Our radical behavior must always lead to the glorification of our heavenly Father. We burn down indiscriminately to illuminate the glory of our Creator. This is the right way to evangelize the world. This unusual behavior must point to the supernatural element within us. No one can do this on their own. God must be acknowledged in everything. The basis of our ongoing joy is the increasing glory of our Father. This is our eternity that will never fade Conclusion: God is more glorious in us when our light comes in contrast with the darkness of the ungodly world. Graham and Gladys Staines' example. God deserves every drop of His glory. This is what we are made for! Let us pray.
