Main Idea : Nothing of righteousness was gained by Abraham according to the flesh; therefore, the blessing of imputed righteousness is for all--Jew and Gentile alike. Religion cannot save. Saving faith is in-uncircumcision faith , both for Jew and Gentile. I (and Paul, I believe) mean that saving faith is faith that finds no worth in circumcision or any other religious rite or experience for hope of righteousness. Saving faith looks to God for righteousness apart from works and religion through belief alone. Workless faith. From the rest of the Bible, including Paul's epistles, we know that doing good works is of great value and even necessary evidence of saving faith. Nonetheless, lest anyone make these works even a partial means of being righteous before God, Paul makes his point using the most extreme language: "to the one who does not work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness." Boasting excluded. The idea of boasting is utterly tied up in these things. If Abraham or you are justified by works, there is room for boasting. But this is simply not reality before God! To boast before God? There is hardly anything more absurd. No one is justified by works of the law and therefore no one has any reason to boast.
