Rise up, O God
There have always been leaders, men of power, kings over their domains. They do as they please, serving up, so often, injustice to the weak. Is that not what we find today? Those who fear God do not sit on the thrones of the world, but are rather those stepped on by earth's rulers. Christian converts from Islam are jailed, missionaries to the East are tortured, those standing for biblical marriage are threatened, and the weakest among us are openly murdered before they even have the chance to take their first breath. As the Psalmist says, "All the foundations of the earth are shaken." And yet there is hope despite the darkness—while these rulers may act like gods, they will all die like men. That is, except for the one—the one ruler unlike all the rest, the one king of justice. While he too dies, he does not do so like sinners paying the due for their own iniquity, but he dies for sinners. This is the justice that exults in mercy. Here, judgment kisses grace. And through this justice can both the weak and wicked be delivered. How is this justice finally accomplished? The Lord declares to his Son, the once-dead-king, "Rise up, O God; judge the earth. For you shall inherit the nations!"
