Your Plans and the Will of God Definitions Revealed will of God = What God clearly reveals to us from him Word that he wants (and commands) for every person to walk in. Secret will of God = Everything that happens, for everything falls under the sovereign hand of God. This includes God's call on individuals' lives. Options Your plan/choice goes against the revealed will of God. This is called "sin." Continuing in this is in essence hardening your heart to God, an expression of unbelief, that leads to falling away from God. It is sin duping us. Instead, we ought to "take care" by exhorting one another today (not tomorrow) to believe the gospel--i.e. have confidence in the sufficient sacrifice of Yeshua for our ugly sin and confidence in the fact that God is more than enough to give us overflowing lives of joy and perfect hope as we walk in his way. 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from e the living God. 13 But f exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by g the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, h if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, b “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” (Heb 3:12-13) To continue in known sin will lead you to fall away from God. After awhile you will not have confidence in Yeshua because you will not believe in him. Your plan/choice is good (i.e. inline with the revealed will of God) but is not God's plan for you. To say it another way, it is not God's call on your life. vs 22 - In the past, Paul has tried to visit the Roman believers, but God has not let him. Why? Because God's call on his life is to preach the gospel where Messiah has not already been named. (See vs 18-21) Make it your ambition to live out your calling--to embrace God's plan for you. Your calling is here, until God moves you. vs 23-33 - At present, Paul hopes and plans to see them because it seems to him inline with his calling. His plan is to go to Jerusalem to bring the contributions and then head to Spain (where Messiah has not been named!) by way of Rome. Though Paul knows that this is contingent upon the Lord's will, which he does not know. Whether with or without Paul's presence, however, God will be there. We learn in Acts what happens. Paul gets arrested (Acts 21:27-36) and sits in jail for two years in Caesarea Philippi (Acts 24:27). God says "no" to Paul and the Roman's prayers. The prayer was not sin. It was just not God's secret will. For a couple years God's secret will looks far worse than Paul's will! What will you do when this happens to you? Will you trust God? Will you wait for him? 29 I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. (Rom 15:29) In the future, after the two years in prison, Paul appeals to Caesar and gets sent to Rome. It is a long, hard journey that includes shipwreck on Malta--a place where Messiah had not yet been named. At last Paul does arrive in Rome, not for a short stay on his way to Spain, but for two years under home arrest, though free to proclaim the Gospel to all who would come to him and to fellowship with the believers in Rome. The story does not go like the movies. Paul is still under charges and will ultimately be sentenced to death. But this is better than the movies, because this is not the end. God always triumphs. This is how Paul says it while in jail... 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. (Phil 1:12-14) Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Phil 1:18b-21) What is the victory you are waiting for? Is it in this life or in the kingdom of God? Your plan/choice is good (i.e. inline with the revealed will of God) and is also God's plan for you. You are living out God's call on your life. As with Paul your efforts will be eternally fruitful. 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. (2Tim 4:6-8) Do not be down cast! Glory is almost here, Yeshua is not long in coming!
