The main idea is the command to abide in Jesus and have Him abide in us (v.4a). Jesus gives us 6 reasons why we should do this: 1. Jesus as the Father's true vine replaces Israel as the locus of the people of God. Abide in Jesus to be part of the people of God. (v.1-2) 2. Jesus has made us clean already (v.3) 3. You can only bear fruit by vital union with Jesus (v. 4b-5) 4. If you don't abide in Jesus you will be condemned (v. 6) 5. If we abide in Jesus and are indwelt by His words we will pray effectively (v.7) 6. The Father will be glorified by us abiding in the vine and producing fruit (v.8)

neither can you, unless you abide in me.
comparison
ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἄμπελος, ὑμεῖς τὰ κλήματα.
I am the vine; you are the branches.
ὁ μένων ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ, οὗτος φέρει καρπὸν πολύν,
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit,
