Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.”
Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.”
Now the man had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Then she said, “I have created a man just as the Lord did!”
And the man knew Eve, his wife,
and she conceived,
and she bore Cain,
and she said,
“I have made a man with YHWH.”
Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.
Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel took care of the flocks, while Cain cultivated the ground.
And she again bore his brother, Abel,
and Abel was a keeper of sheep,
and Cain was a worker of the ground.
So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground.
In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,
At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the Lord.
And it was from the end of days,
and Cain brought from the fruit of the ground an offering to YHWH.
Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering;
and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,
But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock - even the fattest of them. And the Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering,
And Abel brought, he also, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat/choice portions,
and YHWH looked [with favor] to Abel and to his offering.
but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast.
And to Cain and to his offering he did not look [with favor],
and it was very hot to Cain,
and his face fell.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast?
And YHWH said to Cain,
“Why was it hot to you,
and why did your face fall?”
If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it.”
[Is it] not [that] if you do well,
[your face will be] lifted up?
And if you do not do well,
sin [is] crouching at the door,
and its desire [is] for/against you,
and you must rule over it.”
Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
And Cain spoke to Abel, his brother,
and it was when they were in the field,
and Cain rose up against Abel, his brother,
and he killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he replied, “I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guardian?”
And YHWH said to Cain,
“Where [is] Abel, your brother?”
And he said,
“I do not know.
[Am] I my brother’s keeper?”
He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.
And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.
But the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!
And he said,
“What did you do?
The voice of the blood of your brother [is] crying out to me from the ground.”
Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
And now, cursed are you from the ground
that opened its mouth to receive the blood of your brother from your hand.
When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.”
When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.”
When you work the ground,
it will no more give its strength to you.
You will wander to and fro on the earth.”
Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is too great to bear!
Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Then Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is too great to endure!
And Cain said to YHWH,
“My sin [is] greater than I can bear.”
Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.”
Behold, you have driven me today from the face of the ground,
and from your face I will be hidden,
and I will be a wanderer to and fro on the earth,
and it will be [that] whoever finds me will kill me.”
So the Lord said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.
But the Lord said to him, “All right then, if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much.” Then the Lord put a special mark on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down.
And YHWH said to him,
“Very well, whoever kills Cain,
sevenfold vengeance will be taken on him.”
And YHWH put a mark on Cain,
lest whoever finds him should kill him.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain went out from the face of YHWH,
and he settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
