Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον
Then going, the Pharisees took counsel
ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ.

καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες•
and they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying,
διδάσκαλε, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός•
“Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God in truth, and it is not a concern to you about anyone,
οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων,
for you do not look into the face of men.

εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ• ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ;
So tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar or not?”

And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
λέγουσιν αὐτῷ• Καίσαρος.
They said to him, “Caesar’s.”
τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς• ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ.
Then he said to them, “So return to Caesar the things of Caesar and to God the things of God.”
καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν, καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθαν.
And hearing, they marveled, and leaving him, they departed.
