CPT: those born of God overcome the world b/c of their faith, a faith begotten in them at the new birth. This overcoming faith is demonstrated in their love of God, love of his children, and love of his commandments. In fact, love for God is shown by loving his children and loving his commands. Essentially, overcoming faith (wrought in us by God at the new birth) moves us to love God more than we love the world (which is what is meant by overcoming the world). Couple of points here: 1. We don't choose b/w loving God and loving man ... vv2-3 show those ideas are synthesized. If I love God I will love to obey his commands, of which is the command to love one another. 2. If asked, do I overcome the world by the new birth (v4) or by faith (vv4-5), the answer is both. But, again, grammatically, the new birth is the decisive cause of continuous, overcoming faith.
