Main point summary
By the mercies of God, through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, be conformed to the image of Jesus!
a Bless those who persecute 1 you;
Bless/be for the good of/pray for those who persecute you.
Even though they wrong you and mistreat you, bless them
and do not curse.
And do NOT curse them even though the world, your flesh, and Satan long for you to get revenge.
a Rejoice with those who rejoice,
Die to your pride and jealousy and selfishness such that you are truly joyful when things go well for others.
and weep with those who weep.
And have a heart of compassion that enters into and feels the suffering in others and can truly join them in their sorrow.
a Be of the same mind toward one another;
Be united in having the mind of Christ in your thoughts toward one another.
b do not be haughty in mind,
That is, not in arrogance or feelings of supremacy or superiority,
but 1 associate with the lowly.
But prove that you’re not thinking that way by befriending and being united in love with people who are poorer, of lower social standing, or different than you. Demonstrate the equalizing and unifying power of the gospel of Jesus!
c Do not be wise in your own estimation.
Do not think you are wise! You may have been given some wisdom by God’s grace, but the moment you start thinking you are wise is a step toward becoming a fool! When you believe you are wise you stop listening to other people and worse, the Holy Spirit!
a Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.
NEVER! take your own revenge! NEVER! To NO ONE! No matter how they’ve wronged you. No revenge by passive aggressive remarks, eye rolling, cruel comments, there’s a million little ways we do this, especially in a marriage! Jesus commands, “NEVER!”
1 b Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Consider your actions so that men will see your good works and glorify God! Be consistently following Jesus in the sight of all the different people in your life. Model christlikeness to everyone God puts in your path!
It will not always be possible to be at peace with all men if we obey Jesus. “Woe to you when ALL men speak well of you!”, but in the instances where it is possible,
a so far as it depends on you,
With what you can control and in whatever way you can possibly make peace, do it. Do whatever is necessary, work hard at peace right up to the point of where making peace would mean disobedience to Christ, and stop there! At that point, obey Jesus and let the chips fall where God designs.
b be at peace with all men.
Be at peace with all people.
