Main point summary
Main point summary
Many disciples rejected Jesus but the 12, except Judas, believed His deity and kept following because Jesus chose them.
6:60-66 The more the revelation about His deity the greater the rejection and offense of the followers who saw only a good man in Jesus. 6:67-71 It appears that the belief of Jesus's deity kept the 12 on continuing to following Him. This passage shows that only God's chosen once will believe. Very humbling for every Christian! Why me? It is for no good in me but alone by God's grace.
John 6:60-71
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said,
Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, 99 said, “This is a difficult 100 saying! 101 Who can understand it?” 102
“This is a hard saying;
who can understand it?”
When Jesus knew in Himself
When Jesus was aware 103 that his disciples were complaining 104 about this, he said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended? 105
that His disciples complained about this,
He said to them,
“Does this offend you?
What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend
Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before? 106
where He was before?
It is the Spirit who gives life;
The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! 107 The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 108
the flesh profits nothing.
The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
But there are some of you who do not believe.”
But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 109
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.
And He said,
So Jesus added, 110 “Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.” 111
“Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me
unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
From that time many of His disciples went back
After this many of his disciples quit following him 112 and did not accompany him 113 any longer.
and walked with Him no more.
Then Jesus said to the twelve,
So Jesus said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” 114
“Do you also want to go away?”
But Simon Peter answered Him,
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
“Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
Also we have come to believe and know
We 115 have come to believe and to know 116 that you are the Holy One of God!” 117
that You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God.”
Jesus answered them,
Jesus replied, 118 “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?” 119
“Did I not choose you, the twelve,
and one of you is a devil?”
He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon,
(Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, 120 for Judas, 121 one of the twelve, was going to betray him.) 122
for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
[52] Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” (John 6:52 NASB) At first the Jews complained but now also many that followed Jesus.
But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people [25] and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. (John 2:24-25 ESV) What Jesus knew back in chapter 2 came into effect here.
Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. (1 Corinthians 15:45 ESV) Link to Paul's teaching in the Corinthians 30+ years later.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6 ESV) Clear distinction between natural and spiritual life.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. [45] It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— (John 6:44-45 ESV)
“Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” (Acts 5:20 ESV) Years later, an angel referred to Jesus words when he appeared to Paul in Jerusalem's prison.
Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:49 ESV) Nathanael's confession in chapter 1.
I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ (John 13:18 ESV) In reference to Judas
During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, (John 13:2 ESV) The Lord referred to Judas.
