Notes
Introduction "Lest we forget" was written big on the poster for Mozart's Requiem performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra one day before Remembrance Day. It was devoted to all the soldiers that gave their lives to end the hostility during the last world wars. The orchestra delivered an excellent performance of this sad and beautiful piece of music. Death is not a pleasant subject, yet a reality that every single one of us has to face someday. As I observe children and see how joyful and careless they go through life, it seems that the thought of death is not part of their lives. At some point though, they grow up and have learned and experienced enough of disappointments, sufferings, and cruelties in the world that climaxes in death. Observing older people, some get bitter and hard, others terrified and fearful, and some others seem to have found peace over the reality of death. John's record is to prove that Jesus Christ is the long-promised Messiah. Knowing Jesus Christ grants everlasting joy, hope, and comfort which provides strength to go through the present sorrow, suffering, and even death in a spiritually healthy manner. Recap In John's prologue, he parallels the beginning of his record with Genesis, showing that Jesus Christ was in the beginning, through whom everything was created, and who eventually became human to bring light to a world lost in darkness, but was rejected by most people, yet those who believed became children of God. Then John moves on to the disclosure of Jesus Christ through John the Baptist's witness and some people who left their old lives behind to follow Him, who started to witness of the signs that Jesus Christ was the promised Messiah. This brings us to the first sign at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. Insights Key truths: The signs show who Jesus is, i.e. the Messiah We live in a world with flaws, i.e. marked by sin Wine is in God's story a picture of joy and abundance. A time of poverty in Israel was also a time where there was a lack of wine. The wine was mixed with water by a ratio of 1 : 3 - 10. Reason for that was to avoid drunkenness and maintain hydration. Why did they run out of wine? It should not have happened. We live in a world that missed God's standard of glory, perfection, and excellence. Verse 4a "Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me?" - Yes, they run out of wine but I'm not responsible for the wine. Meaning, yes, joy should always be present but I'm not responsible that joy fades away. Mankind is responsible for the emptiness of life which ends eventually in death because he rebelled against God, or in other words, mankind has cut themselves off from the source of joy. Verse 4b "My hour has not yet come." He means the hour when he would be cut off from all joy. He speaks of the hour on the cross when He'd take away the sin of the world. He'd bear mankind's curse in order to provide everlasting joy for whosoever will in His life - He rose from the dead and is alive in the presence of God the Father in heaven and promised to return soon as Victor, King, and righteous Ruler over all. Jesus provides wine. He becomes the curse so that whoever believes on Him may have joy forever. Verse 6 Waterpots for purification - Mark 7:3, 4 explains that the water was used for cleansing before eating, for example. Water is required for cleansing the dirt off which we gather up in life whether knowingly or unknowingly. On the cross, Jesus cleanses from spiritual dirt once for all by taking all impurity on Himself to purify and grants everlasting joy to whoever wants it.
