PROVERBS #6 Benefits of Wisdom III. THE BENEFITS OF WISDOM [verses 10-22] A. Verses 10-11 - When wisdom takes residence in the heart and when knowledge is pleasing to the soul, then discretion (carefulness) and understanding become a keeping principle . Wisdom produces a carefulness within us that will enable us to handle life with prudence and grace. 1. There Is A Keeping From The Way Of The Evil Man ➲ “speaketh froward things” [ verse 12 ]. Frowardness is to “ be unwilling to comply with what is right, or that which is perverse and disobedient ”. ➲ “Who leave the paths of uprightness” [ verse 13 ]. “ Uprightness” is honesty and integrity . Discretion and Understanding keep us on the right path! ➲ “to walk in the ways of darkness” [ verse 13 ]. They leave the paths of honesty and integrity in order to walk in the ways of evil. ➲ “Who rejoice to do evil” [ verse 14 ]. They take pleasure in committing sin . Wisdom, which begins through the fear of the Lord, makes the difference! ➲ “and delight in the frowardness of the wicked” [ verse 14 ]. They not only take pleasure in committing sin themselves, but find delight in seeing others sin. ➲ “Whose ways are crooked” [ verse 15 ]. The word “ crooked ” speaks of that which “ deviates from a straight line" ➲ “and they froward in their paths” [ verse 15 ]. They are perverse , disobedient , and unwilling to comply with that which is right. 2. There Is A Keeping From The Strange Woman [ verses 16-19 ]. ➲ Flattery - Verse 16 -The Harlot uses flattering words to deceive, to entice, and draw us away from God. ➲ Forsaking - Verse 17 -The Harlot has left what she learned as a child, a reference back to Chapter 1:7-9, and also God himself. ➲ False- Verse 17 -Those that have a form, or history of godliness but deny the power thereof, from such turn away. ➲ Fatal- Verses 18-19 -The ways of the strange woman are the ways of death and destruction. 3. There Is Preservation In Duty [ verses 20 ] A. The wisdom that gives discretion not only keeps one from evil, but enables one to walk in righteousness. As a result God blesses the “upright” [ verse 21 ], but judgment awaits the wicked [ verse 22 ]. This is the objective achieved in being kept from the Evil Man and the Strange woman.
Proverbs 2:10-22 KJV
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; 13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: 16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; 17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. 18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. 19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. 20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. 22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
