If anyone thinks he is religious
If one assumes he is pleasing God
q and [anyone] does not bridle his tongue
however doesn't get control of how he speaks
[Then anyone] but deceives his heart ,
Then he is fooling himself to the core
this person’s r religion is worthless .
his efforts to please God are fruitless trees
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:
Pleasing God is sincere and without ulterior motive,
s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction,
For example, visiting those with the greatest need,
and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
and not going with the flow of the world.
Psalm 68:5, Psalm 10:4, Lev 11:44
Devotional Thoughts: As James discusses True Religion he quickly lists out some do's and don'ts, which on the surface may seem fairly simple to either do or not do. However, In approaching these verses from a simple do not do perspective you abruptly run into the wall of why do serving orphans and widows make my religious journey true? What about human trafficking, abortion, and poverty? Don't those issues count too? Great question! Well, the main point of these two verses does in fact specifically say widows and orphans. Yet the underlying message is to mirror the character of God i.e Deut 10:8 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Psalm 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. Lev 11:44 For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. . Note the reason for the Hebrews consecrating themselves in Lev 11:44 is not out of religious duty but to mirror the character of God. So instead of making a religious to-do list...Walk with your father in the word and be like him.
Main point summary
