Teaching Points: Paul's statement in 18 is bold and almost mysterious. It requires some solid grounding. So, Paul spends the next 7 verses doing just that. First, (v. 19-20) he explains that the reason that the Gospel in foolishness to the perishing but wisdom to the the elect is that this is God's design, evidenced by the word of God in Is. 26:14. Then, he restates that this is God's design (21), but this time pointing to the nature of preaching. But this begs the question: Why did God design it this way? The answer to that is in v. 25: God's foolishness is greater than our wisdom and his weakness is greater than our strength. In other words, God has brought down our pride,our lofty thinking, our grand philosophies -- our ways of seeing and understanding and dealing with life -- and shown them to be utterly foolish. Only by receiving His wisdom can we begin to grasp His view of reality and His solution to our predicament. Application Points : 1. We who teach must never depend on our thoughts or understandings or our theology. These must always and consistently be placed against the standard of the revealed Word of God. 2. We must not look to worldly notions of reality for solutions to our problems. Not even conservative politics, Christianized psychology, or family-values radio can offer wisdom apart from the truth of the Gospel. If we look to these things rather than the Word, we are looking to the wisdom of man when we should be seeking after the foolishness of God.

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
alternative
For it is written,
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart."
series
ideaexplanation
ποῦ σοφός;
Where is the one who is wise?
ποῦ γραμματεύς;
Where is the scribe?
ποῦ συζητητὴς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου;
Where is the debater of this age?
οὐχὶ ἐμώρανεν ὁ θεὸς τὴν σοφίαν τοῦ κόσμου;
Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
questionanswer
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom,
it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.
inference
For Jews demand signs
and Greeks seek wisdom,
but we preach Christ crucified,
a stumbling block to Jews
and folly to Gentiles,
but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
negativepositive
progression
For the foolishness of God is wiser than men,
and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
