The main point of this passage seems to be found in 17c-d. We should set our hopes on God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. God is not stingy in that he withholds from us what is necessary to bring us joy causing us to to go into the world and use our own abilities and resources to make up for God's insufficiencies. In fact it is our own abilities and worldly riches that are uncertain and can never give us the highest joy which can only be found and provided in and by God. The purpose for doing this is found in v.19. That by fixing our hopes on God we should store up for ourselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that we may take hold of that which is life indeed. Setting your hopes on God involves a positive and a negative action. Negatively you are not to be conceited or arrogant and set your hope on yourself and your own abilities which in comparison to God's abilities are futile and worthless. You are also not to set your hope on the riches of this world, or what your abilities can get you. (v. 17a-b) Positively you are to set your hopes on God (and his abilities) who is infinitely more able to provide all that we can ever enjoy. Setting your hope on God positively expresses in what follows in v.18-19. List of how we positively set our hope on God as found in v.18 Do good be rich in good works be generous be ready to share Repeated Word or concept: Rich v.17a riches17b richly 17d rich 18b treasure 19a

Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited
As for the rich (ANT) in this present age, charge (STRONG AV!) them not to be (AV!) haughty,
or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches,
nor to set (AV!) their hopes on the uncertainty of riches ,
but on God,
but (c) set (AV!) your hopes on God ,
who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
who richly provides (AV!) us with everything to enjoy (AV!) .
Instruct them to do good,
They are to do (AV!) good,
to be rich in good works,
to be (AV!) rich (FOS) in good works,
to be generous
to be (AV!) generous
and ready to share,
and (to be) ready (AV!) to share,
storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future,
thus storing up treasure(similar to riches) (FOS) for themselves as a good foundation for the future,
so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.
so that they may take hold (AVF!) of that which is truly life.
