u My son, v if you receive my words
בְּנִי אִם־תִּקַּח אֲמָרָי
and treasure up my commandments with you,
וּמִצְוֺתַי תִּצְפֹּן אִתָּךְ׃

making your ear attentive to wisdom
לְהַקְשִׁיב לַחָכְמָה
and inclining your heart to understanding;
אָזְנֶךָ תַּטֶּה לִבְּךָ לַתְּבוּנָה׃

yes, if you call out for insight
כִּי אִם לַבִּינָה
and raise your voice w for understanding,
תִקְרָא לַתְּבוּנָה תִּתֵּן קוֹלֶךָ׃
if you seek it like x silver
אִם־תְּבַקְשֶׁנָּה כַכָּסֶף
and search for it as for y hidden treasures,
וְכַמַּטְמוֹנִים תַּחְפְּשֶׂנָּה׃
then z you will understand the fear of the Lord
אָז תָּבִין יִרְאַת יְהוָה
and find the knowledge of God.
וְדַעַת אֱלֹהִים תִּמְצָא׃
For a the Lord gives wisdom;
כִּי־יְהוָה יִתֵּן חָכְמָה
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
מִפִּיו דַּעַת וּתְבוּנָה׃
he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
וצפן 1 לַיְשָׁרִים תּוּשִׁיָּה
he is b a shield to those who c walk in integrity,
מָגֵן לְהֹלְכֵי תֹם׃
guarding the paths of justice
לִנְצֹר אָרְחוֹת מִשְׁפָּט
and d watching over the way of his e saints.
וְדֶרֶךְ חסידו 1 יִשְׁמֹר׃

f Then you will understand g righteousness and justice and equity, every good path;
אָז תָּבִין צֶדֶק וּמִשְׁפָּט וּמֵישָׁרִים כָּל־מַעְגַּל־טוֹב׃
