Introduction: The Gnostics taught that keeping certain laws and observing certain days was needed to break the wall of separation between God and man. But Paul says that legalism has no real value and will never work to because it is just a shadow of the real thing - Christ. God Deals with Our Separation from him. vv. 11-12 When we identify by faith with the death and resurrection of Christ on our behalf for our sins, we become spiritually circumsized and baptized, that is, removed from our old life and brought into a new life as a child of God. A. Circumcision - a sign and seal of identifying oneself with Jewish nation. B. Baptism - sign and seal of identifying oneself with the death and resurrection of Christ. God Deals with Our Sin? vv. 13-15 At salvation God deals with all of the aspects of sin that separates us from him. A. How does he deal with the nature of our sin? - makes us alive together with him... v.13c B. How does he deal with the penalty of our sin? - forgives us...cancels our record of debt...set it aside by nailing it to the cross. v13d-14 C. How does he deal the cause of our sin? - stripped satan of his control over us. v. 15 Satan lost us forever. God is the new ruler in our lives How should you deal with pressures to add works to your salvation? vv. 16-17 These shadows have no value since Christ, the reality has come and completed the works for our salvation.. A. Food and Drink - Dietary laws that the Israelites were to follow. B. Festivals - celebration of redemption from Egypt. C. New Moon - monthly sacrifice offered on the first day of the month to appreciate God's season of abundant provision. D. Sabbath - The weekly celebration of the seventh day, which pictured God's rest from creation.

In him also you were circumcised
with a circumcision made without hands,
ideaexplanation
by putting off the body of the flesh,
actionmanner
by the circumcision of Christ,
having been buried with him in baptism,
in which you were also raised with him through faith
in the powerful working of God,
who raised him from the dead.
And you, who were dead in your trespasses
and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
God made alive together with him ,
having forgiven us all our trespasses,
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.
This he set aside ,
[by] nailing it to the cross .
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame,
by triumphing over them in him.
series
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you
in questions of food and drink,
or with regard to a festival
or a new moon
or a Sabbath.
inference
These are a shadow of the things to come,
but the substance belongs to Christ.
