See this website for good commentary on this passage: http://preceptaustin.org/philippians_127-28.htm Title: The Keys to a Healthy, Well-balanced Church Text: Philippians 1:27-30 Purpose: To encourage Christians to stay healthy with courage and unity for the faith of the gospel, despite evil opposition. Pre-Introduction: As citizens of heaven, we have been called for the sake of the Christ to suffer whatever consequences that we may face when standing up for the gospel. Therefore, when we are faced with opposition for preaching the faith of the gospel, we should face them with a standing, single focused, striving side by side fearless attitude for what we believe, teach and preach about the gospel, even if the consequences become the cause for suffering . Introduction: As one author said - "We are a heavenly people with a heavenly origin, a heavenly citizenship, a heavenly destiny, called to live heavenly lives in a foreign land, telling others of a heavenly Father who offers them salvation through faith in his heavenly son." How should we conduct ourselves in a worthy manner as heavenly citizens in the midst of a world that opposes the faith of the heavenly gospel that we preach? Paul considers 4 ways to conduct ourselves "in a manner worth of the gospel of Christ. [He begins by exhorting the church to... I. Stand Together with Firmness (v. 27f) [The second exhortation is to... II. Share Together with Focus (same attitude/understanding and One mind (v. 27g) [The third exhortation is to... III. Strive Together with Fearlessness (v. 27h-28) [The fourth and last exhortation is to... IV. Suffer Together with Faithfulness (v. 29-30) sharing in one spirit ( cooperation ) - having a disposition or attitude of support for on another. It is the idea of standing together so that we can endure the fierce onslaughts of adversity and the subtle attacks of our spiritual foe. with one mind - with one soul contending (as a team of athletes would) in perfect co-operation with one another for the faith of the gospel (Wuest). One "soul" or mind indicates that unity must extend to inward disposition. They were to maintain a single "souled" (minded) focus in the face of opposition. Christians face a common foe & should not fight each other but should unite against the enemy. standing firm ( constancy ) - Steko indicates the determination of a soldier who stands or keeps his ground not budging one inch from his post in war. Paul is saying that I want to hear that you are keeping (defending) your ground in battle (false teachings/systems) as you spread the faith of the gospel
