Main point summary
The Pharisees try to trick Jesus by asking him if divorce is lawful. Jesus asks them what scripture says. The Pharisees say that Moses allowed for divorce (Deut 24:1-4). Jesus says that this allowance was only given because of their sinful hearts; he then refers to how Genesis 1:27 and 2:24 says that marriage is a one-flesh union and that therefore man shouldn’t separate what God joined together. Later, Jesus privately teaches his disciples that if a person divorces their spouse and marriages another, they commit adultery.
