3 Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition 5 or vanity, each of you should , in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself . 4 Each of you should be concerned 6 not only 7 about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well. 8 5 You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had, 9 6 10 who though he existed in the form of God 11 did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, 12 by looking like other men, 13 and by sharing in human nature. 14 8 He humbled himself , by becoming obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross!

See google doc also The descent of Christ, and the glory He received and will receive are such great heights and depths. The goodness of such humility is not in the going down by itself. But it lies in the confidence that that humility will be rightly rewarded by the Father. This is important because if I think that just humility itself is joyful, then it's actual lack of joy cannot feed me. I have made this mistake many times in my life. And I could not sustain the humble act. It does come down to finding joy and security, hope and reward in God. Summary Jesus was the ultimate example of the Person who humbly serves and rightly does so from the right bases. He did not strive to hold onto the status and place of being God, but deprived Himself of that exalted position by being a slave, servant and becoming human. More than that, He obeyed even to the point of death. Elect Exiles (green rectangle and highlight) Observations Motivations for elect exiles are not to be selfish ambition or vainglory v.3 They are to be for humility, counting others as more important to serve than just myself v.3 to be concerned for myself v.4 but not myself alone, but one another v.4 Mindset should be the same as Jesus (please see above on the description of Christ) v.5 Questions/Thoughts Is the "others", and "towards one another" fellow believers or including unbelievers also? Summary Believers (elect exiles) are to serve one another, not out to get some advancement or honour for ourselves, but to consider others to have priority in serving than ourselves. Believers are to be concerned for our own interests, but not just that solely, and not ultimately the highest priority, or higher than the other. Believers are to follow such humble service as Jesus has done. Takeaway For me, after having failed many times, trying humble service for it's own sake, I am taking away here that Jesus was able to do such humble acts by Heb 12:2. So I shall pray and work towards looking to that Joy that Jesus had before Him, and then out of that trust of God's care, security, reward, joy, I shall pray and seek to do as Jesus did in humble service.

Dr Piper's Questions
Look at Philippians 2:3–4, and explain the lifestyle Paul is describing in your own words. Do not do things out of the intent to compete with someone, or for my own vainglory and empty pride... but in the manner of lowering myself to serve another (as Christ did), put others in front of my own importance. I am to not only look to my own matters, but also to the concerns of others as well (I note that 2:4 does not say I am not to attend to my own interests. So it is my responsibility to attend to my interests too - a helpful corrective for me) What kind of person lives like this? I am taking ideas from beyond this passage to all of Philippians: this person is one who has the same humble mind as Christ. A person whose security in Christ is so sure, that she can give up what is due to her, because she trusts that God will see her through. As an outcome of this security, this hope, she can follow Jesus in his lowering to be one of us. Because Jesus trusted the Father implicitly. Her joy from serving others, considering others more important than her own, comes within this context that she is free to serve, given the immense identity, security, and joy in Christ. Now read Philippians 2:9–11. Do you see anything new about the humility of Jesus Christ in these verses? The great assurance beyond just following what Jesus does, but that God will provide that great security that any honour to be given to us, will be given by God Himself in His time. So I don’t have to worry that if I allow myself a lesser place for the sake of another, that I will never be attended to. What does that mean for our humility and service now? Because God will exalt and give honour, Jesus could look forward to Heb 12:2, the joy set before Jesus. By having this same mind, of looking to this same joy set before us, we can be humble and serve.
