Study Questions 1. How many things did God do in Colossians 2:13–14 to save you from your sin? How many can you identify in just those two verses (John sees five)? He nailed the "record of debt" to the cross This enabled Him to set this record of debt aside which enabled Him to cancel this record of debt which enabled Him to forgive all our trespasses which enabled Him to bring us to life 2. Now try to define the relationships between them. How do the different actions relate to one another? Each thing God did could lead to the other, see above. Each thing could be only accomplished by the thing done before it. Therefore, God brought us to life by forgiving us of all our trespasses. He could forgive by canceling the record of debt. He could cancel by setting this record aside. He could set this aside by nailing it to the Cross of Jesus Christ. 3. Based on the previous verse ( Colossians 2:12 ), who can claim the forgiveness found in Colossians 2:13–14 ? Only those who through faith, believe that Jesus is the Christ, who was nailed to the Cross. And by this, ultimately could bring us to life through the Cross, and answer the ultimate problem of sin. Key Terms and Phrases Canceling (ESV), Destroyed (NET): The participle ἐξαλείψας (exaleipsas) is a temporal adverbial participle of contemporaneous time related to the previous verb συνεζωοποίησεν (sunezōopoiēsen), but has been translated as a finite verb because of the complexity of the Greek sentence and the tendency of contemporary English to use shorter sentences. For the meaning “destroy” see BDAG 344–45 s.v. ἐξαλείφω Biblical Studies Press, The NET Bible First Edition; Bible. English. NET Bible.; The NET Bible (Biblical Studies Press, 2005).
