NT
1 John 2:19
esv
mine
They went out from us,
"They" referring to the anti-Christs in v.18.
but they were not of us;
These which had been with true believers were not true believers
for if they had been of us,
because if they were true believers
they would have continued with us.
true believers would continue in the faith, with other true believers
But they went out,
These however left the true believers, and the faith
that it might become plain
for the purpose that it might be revealed that
that they all are not of us.
these who left are not true believers.
Note: It is not possible to tell true believers from false, until they leave. A sobering thought. Something to be watchful for ourselves too!
Summary Points with Study Questions
Do you believe that a Christian can lose his salvation? Why or why not?
A true Christian will not lose his salvation because he will continue to the end of his life to be true to the faith.
What does 1 John 2:19 tell us about Christians walking away from the church and the faith?
It tells us that such a person is not a true Christian.
If it is accurate that all true believers endure to the end, does that mean we can coast in our walk with God?
No, it means that we should earnestly persist in the faith to the end. See Phil 2:12-13.
