Since therefore z Christ suffered in the flesh, 1
1 Peter 2:24, 1 Peter 3:18, Romans 6:6-7 -- these describe how Christ's death is the suffering in the flesh
a arm yourselves with the same way of thinking,
We are to arm ourselves against the battle of sin and unbelief by A) 1 Peter 1:13 - to consider closely how Christ hoped in the Father, and how we have hope in the grace Christ purchased for us. B) 1 Peter 2:11, 1 Peter 4:3-4 - to set our minds not forgo our fleshly passions and not join in the sins of the world. C) 1 Peter 5:8-10 To set our minds, our hearts, our worldview upon the promises of God that see us through suffering for doing good, and how God will restore, confirm, strengthen and establish us. The same way of thinking refers to 1 Peter 2:21 - 24 where Peter explains more fully this mindset which Jesus sets as an example for us: 1) Christ committed no sin; 2) Christ did not resort to deceit to escape suffering; 3) Christ did not return evil for evil; 4) Christ entrusted Himself, His cause, His vindication to the Father; 5) Christ desired for His suffering to heal.
inference
for b whoever has suffered in the flesh
Two ways of understanding this: a) with 1 Peter 4:3-4 where suffering for doing good is equivalent to suffering in the flesh. b) where Christ's death and our sharing in His death results in the death of sin. I agree with Pastor John Piper in accepting the meaning of b).
c has ceased from sin,
The end result of either view above is the same - to put to death sin.
