Timothy is charged by Paul to remain at Ephesus. Basically, he is to be the overseer / elder / pastor. The reason he was put into place was to guard against false doctrine (myths) and misleading emphasis on things not crucial to the Gospel (endless genealogies). This is relevant today especially pertaining to end-times theorists. I believe that was a common theme of debate in Paul's day as well. This is evident as he says their misplaced devotion leads to speculations (assumingly about the future) which diverted the people's attention away from the present, disinclining them to live by faith, knowing that future matters have already been decided by the Lord. The goal in preventing these false teachers is the prevailing of love. Love does not win in the light (or darkness) of false doctrine. And if a person does not seek after a pure heart , a good conscience , and a sincere faith , their love will be tainted along with their doctrine, no matter how much they desire to teach the Bible. Therefore, if one desires to be a good teacher of the law, (s)he must first pursue a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. The last section reassures us that no matter how much the law is preached outside the Gospel, and no matter how many have been led astray, the law is still beneficial for those who know how to use it. This is encouraging because many are prone to avoid the law when trying to reach the lost, afraid that it has lost its effectiveness due to the false context it has been presented in so many times before, but we must remember that the Gospel is far more powerful than anyone's preconceived notions about Christianity. What an encouragement to Bible Belt pastors and evangelists! Also, we should not be ashamed of any part of the Bible. All that has been revealed to us is to God's glory. Many want to gloss over God's ruthless displays of sovereignty in the Old Testament so they can make the Gospel more appealing. It's nothing we can do that makes the Gospel "more appealing." Indeed it is out of our hands and up to the God who is in the heavens and does all that he pleases. This is a great proof text for the saying "right thinking begets right worship." And in light of this text, that should be a treasured motto for all entrusted with a people to lead.
