Gen 6:1-8
OT
Genesis 6:1-8
"Depicts a fresh threat to the God-given distinction between divine beings and humans. It raises again the worst fears expressed at the close of Gen 3 (‘the man has become like one of us … and now he might … eat, and live forever’) but in the new shape of gross physical contact between the sons of God and the beautiful daughters of humans" (DDD,2009)
"The Nephilim were the mythical semi-divine beings spawned by these illicit liaisons." ( Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible ,2009)
"Outrageous activity of this kind which resulted in violence and corruption on the earth provoked God’s judgement in the form of the Flood. The monstrous Nephilim were swept away by it and humans would not live forever." (DDD,2009)
Ezek 32:27 - (npl - fall) fallen warriors who were sent to Sheol with their weapons of war.
1 Enoch 6:2: And the angels, the children of the heaven , saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men 3 and beget us children.'
1 Enoch 7:1 And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them
1 Enoch 9:6-9 "Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which 7 men were striving to learn: And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the 9 women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins."
1 Enoch 12:5 "Ye have wrought great destruction on the earth: And ye shall have no peace nor forgiveness of sin" 2nd Temple Judaism linked man's furthering depravity to this event. Peter (1 Pe 3:19; 2 Pe 2: 4) seems to link the heavenly beings' sin to the events leading up to the flood and the judgment on the ancient world. Paul (1 Cor 11:10) seems to be using this event as the ground for his statement: a woman must have a symbol of authority over her head. These heavenly beings, deliberately and unopposed by man, without any regard for God's authority took any woman they chose. Jude (Jude 6,8) also seems to connect the Sons of God's account I read in 1 Enoch with Gen 6 and the judgment.
The great wickedness of humankind was, in part, according to the writer of 1 Enoch, the result of the influence and work of the sons of God on humankind. However, this wickedness is ascribed to humans because, as 1 Enoch says, they were striving to learn all kinds of sins. The sons of God are judged and condemned because of their transgression, and humans, on the other hand, are judged and condemned because of their desire to learn all kinds of sins and for the evil that covered, inundated, and consumed the earth like the waters cover the ocean.
Gen 5:28-29 Noah shall bring rest to a people who live in pain as a consequence of sin and death. Noah is supposed to bring a people out of the cursed ground they inhabit into the garden of God.
God puts and end to man's life because humans, once more and in a different way, aided by the sons of God, rebel against Him by desiring to become like God and the heavenly beings (Gen 3:5). Man is also flesh and, for this reason, God's spirit will not struggle with man's spirit everlastingly.
At this point, God has not lamented putting man on the earth - or at least said it - but, as a consequence of this rebellion, acts in a way that prevents humans from constantly striving, desiring, rebelling to become like God. God doesn't tolerate this evil.
God limits man's life and, as a result, man's rebellion and wickedness, but his mercy and grace are unlimited and unmerited. Humans did deserve to be swept away by the monstrous waters of the earth, but God provides a "savior of humanity" and an escape from man's monstrous evil that is, at this very moment, covering the earth.
What is the sin of the Watchers, who are the sons of God? They have defiled themselves by laying with women. This defilement is only the visible result of their disregard for God's authority, his rule, and His glory.
Salvific, restorative (Gen 9:1-11) hope found in Noah...up until he fails and the reader finds out he cannot bring rest or bring humanity out of the curse, (Gen 9:20-22) as he also brings his seed under a curse. (Gen 9:24-25) WHO WILL BRING US OUT OF A CURSE AND RESTORE OUR COMMUNION WITH GOD IN THE GARDEN?
God's seeing - the wicked scene before his eyes
God's thoughts - the proper response to spiritual and human wickedness.
God's words - the just judgement of a wicked world.
God's words - the just judgement of a wicked world
Heavenly beings and humans rebel in a new way, but God judges the world and condemns the transgressors.
