Faith without works is as dead as a body without a spirit.
James 2:14-26
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith
Someone may have faith
o but does not have works?
BUT no works
Can that faith save him?
Can that alone save him?
p If a brother or sister is poorly clothed
IF a brother or sister is poorly clothed
and lacking in daily food,
AND lacking in daily food
q and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,”
and ones response is to "go in peace and be warmed and filled"
without giving them the things needed for the body,
WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND doesn't give them whats needed for the body
what good 1 is that?
THEN what good is that?
So also faith by itself,
So faith by itself
if it does not have works,
BY not having works
is dead.
RESULTS in that faith being dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”
Someone says "you have faith and I have works"
Show me your faith r apart from your works,
Show me faith apart from works
and I will show you my faith
And Ill show you faith
s by my works.
BY my works
t You believe that God is one;
You believe God is one
you do well.
that results in you doing "well"
Even u the demons believe— and shudder!
ALTHOUGH even the demons believe and shudder.
Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
Foolish person, Do you want to be shown that faith apart from works is useless?
v Was not Abraham our father justified
Abraham was jusitifed
by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?
WHEN he offered up Isaac on the altar.
You see that w faith was active
Faith was active
along with his works,
THAT IS along with works
and faith was completed
AND faith was completed
x by his works;
BY his works
and the Scripture was fulfilled that says,
AND the Scripture was fulfilled
y “Abraham believed God,
THAT IS Abraham believed God
and it was counted to him as righteousness”—
RESULT- it was counted to him as righteousness
and he was called a z friend of God.
AND he was called a friend of God.
You see that a person is justified
A person is justified
by works
BY his works
and not by faith alone.
NOT by faith alone
And in the same way was not also a Rahab the prostitute justified by works
JUST AS Rahab was justified by works
b when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
WHEN she received the messengers
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead,
FOR the body apart from the Spirit is dead
so also faith apart from works is dead.
IN OTHER WORDS faith also apart from works is dead.
This was a hard one for me. I tried to break 20 up after "you foolish person" but I never could come up with a relationship. Input welcome!! I think He's kinda trying to say... "You want to be shown that faith apart from works is useless.?? see how good it does the demons... they believe AND shutter. Keep on deceiving yourself into thinking its faith alone is enough, and you will be shown" So I do feel like Im missing a relationship but I also could be seeing this wrong.
James is not lighthearted in this matter. Much to examine in my life. The last verse sums it up that just as someone would be foolish to think a body is alive apart from the spirit, it would be just as foolish to think we have any faith at all apart from works. We must have zero confidence in our faith, if theres no works to back it up. These verses are easy to skim over but very weighty when it comes to self examination. Esp when you have Matthew 7:20 that says if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, we could move mountains. So we see that even a tee tiny amount of faith would result in big works. How I pray that the Lord would grow my faith, which WOULD result in His mighty works being on display in my life... and all this for HIS glory.
