Text 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:1-7 ESV Main Point Summary "Jesus Christ is Lord" , is the first impression Paul wants to make to his Roman audience as he greets them. Jesus Christ is Lord of all . Lord when used of Jesus represented his deity , clearly depicted by the disciple Thomas when he declared of Jesus "my Lord and my God" (john 20:28) . Peter in Acts 10:36 tells us that "He is Lord of all ".Paul in his introduction to the Romans focuses the attention of his readers to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We see a variety of ways in which the Lordship of Jesus is stated or implied. Jesus Christ is Lord over Paul . Paul acknowledges this fact by calling himself a servant of Jesus. The word translated "servant" in the greek is slave. Paul emphasises the lordship of Jesus by showing himself to be a slave of the master Jesus Christ. He recognizes that his apostleship is owing to Jesus Christ But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he (Paul) is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. Acts 9:15 ESV Jesus Christ is Lord of the scriptures The scriptures testify about him (verse 2&3) Paul makes it clear that the promised Son of David , The King of Israel, is Jesus Christ. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 ESV You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, John 5;9 Jesus Christ is Lord over death He was declared to be the son of God by resurrection from death. (verse 4) His resurrection , powered by the Holy Spirit, is given as evidence that Christ is the Son Of God, a term that equates him with God and thus declares him to be God. 55“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 ESV Jesus Christ is Lord over missions It is he who has commissioned Paul to bring about obedience to him in the nations (verse 5 & 6) Paul says that it is Jesus Christ , who has commissioned him to go bring all nations into obedience to him(Christ) for his name sake. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Jesus Christ is Lord of Grace and Peace It is he that gives it out to us Any grace and peace we have a from The Lord as evidenced in numerous places in the bible : Num 6:25f ; 1 Cor 1:3 ; 2 Cor 1:2 ; Gal 1:3 ; Eph 1:2 ; Phil 1:2 ; Col 1:2 ; 1 Thess 1:1 ; 2 Thess 1:2
