Central Idea: Paul relates the substance of his prayers on behalf of the Colossian believers: that they would be filled with the knowledge of God's will in a fullness of spiritual discernment, with the result that they would walk worthy in every kind of pleasing attitude, that is, in every good work - bearing fruit; in all power - being strengthened; all the while giving thanks to the Father who has rescued his enemies and made them sons. Explanations / Questions: v.9b, Question: ἵνα (that) generally denotes purpose, and that sense is somewhat appropriate here (the aim or intented result of Paul's praying is, 'that they may be filled...'), but it is primarily marking the content of Paul's prayer. So, the question is, what logical relation do I use to identify a marker of content? In this case, the two participles ( praying and asking ) help describe it as Ac-Mn, where praying is the action that is more precisely described by the manner, asking that... However, what if it were simply, "I am praying that..." ? (added 10/13/09) I have changed my thinking here a bit. I don't think I have the freedom to separate the participles into Ac-Mn. So I am forced to keep ἵνα (that) as expressing purpose (or the aim of Paul's praying), though I am not fully satisfied that Ac-Pur properly identifies ἵνα when it is a marker of content. Patrick's arc "Prayer Produces Right Living" was helpful to me on this point. (added 2/12/10); Brian's arc (blog entry) answers my question with Id-Ex. This is the way I have arced similar constructions in other passages lately. Insights: Paul prays that these believers may be filled with the knowledge of God's will. And then in the clauses that folow he uses the phrase, "in (or for) all... " five times: ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ, in all wisdom εἰς πᾶσαν ἀρεσκείαν, in every pleasing attitude ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ, in every (good) work ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει, in all power εἰς πᾶσαν ὑπομονὴν καὶ μακροθυμίαν, in (for) all endurance and patience Paul's emphasis is on the fulness of knowing God and the experience of his work. See: 2Peter 1:3-4ff
