Central Idea: Paul's prayer for the Colossians overflows into a hymn of praise declaring the glories of Christ; first, as the author and sustainer of the universe; secondly, as its redeemer. Explanations / Questions: Every phrase in this section is tightly packed, and together they are piled one atop another. This makes it seem somewhat arbitrary to identify clear units beyond the individual clauses and the whole they comprise. The two main sections (15-18a, and 18b-20) each begin with hos estin followed by the term 'firstborn', and then statements grounding the initial proposition. This may be trying to force some symmetry and distinguish a major section-break, but the break is aided by the introduction of the resurrection ( 'he is the beginning - the firstborn fron the dead' ) which establishes God's purpose in Christ to reconcile all things , to restore the universe to his original design. v. 20, Question: What was in heaven that needed to be reconciled to Christ? Or is this not pointing to something/someone specific but a general declaration that the entire universe is/will be at peace with God through Christ? Insights / Cross-References: v.15, Christ is the image of the invisible God John 14:8-9, "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father" 2 Cor. 4:6, "...to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." Heb. 1:3, "He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature."

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church.
ground
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in everything he might be preeminent.
actionpurpose
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heave n ,
making peace by the blood of his cross.
