The main thing here is that Paul is grieving. Why is he grieving? His reason for grieving is that the Jews are cursed, and he would like to be cursed in their place. However, mixed in with the grief seems to be the the reality of the glories of Israel, which he unfolds poetically in parallel, and then adds the Fathers, and even Christ in the flesh. This double-sided grief... the curse and the glory is like grief for any dead unbelieving family member: on the one hand, they are cursed, and on the other hand, God was so clearly working in their lives. Schaeffer calls us glorious ruins, which seems something akin to Paul's understanding of Israel. Now, Israel has clearly been closer to God in many ways than a random family member, but they have also strayed much further away. Paul grieves because Israel is a glorious ruin.
