Thoughts and ideas and questions: Q: How does this section go together? How are the imperative verbs (and the implied imperatives in v22-24) perhaps a key to understanding Paul's arguments? Q: What is the use of repetition, mutiple uses of the eautov reflexive pronoun, and the many "just as" statements? Q: How does being "members of his body" relate to loving one's love even as one feeds and takes care of one's own body? I didn't get to class at all this week as I have been sick...so I have not explored this passage as I should have done. I need to get questions done/answered immediately on monday nights or early tuesday, because not answering the questions has become the norm this past month.

Wives, (submit) to your own husbands
(just) as (you submit) to the Lord,
comparison
for the husband is the head of the wife,
even as Christ is head of the church,
he (is) the Redeemer of the body.
ideaexplanation
But as the church submits itself to Christ,
in the same way also wives (submit) to your husbands in all things.
bilateral
Husbands, love (your) wives
just as Christ loved the church
and gave himself on behalf of her
series
in order that he might purify her,
cleansing her in the washing of water in the Word
(and moreover) in order that he might present to himself (as) glorious the church,
not having spot or wrinkle or anything of such a kind,
(but) rather (ultimately) in order that she/the church might be holy and without blemish.
progression
actionpurpose
In this same way (Christ loving the church and giving himself for her) also husbands ought to love their own wives as (their) own bodies,
(for) the one who himself loves his wife loves himself.
ground
For no one ever hated his flesh himself,
but he feeds (it) and he takes care of it,
negativepositive
just as also Christ (feeds and takes care of) the church.
because we are members of his body.
(Therefore,) "because of this a man will leave behind (his) father and (his) mother
and he will be united in marriage to his wife
and the two will be one flesh."
This mystery is great,
but I am speaking concerning Christ and concerning the church.
alternative
But also in the same way you, with reference to each one of you (husbands), must love (your) wives,
and just as (she respects) herself
the wife must respect her husband.
