Some questions and initial answers for this passage: Q: What is the sense of why this "mystery" suddenly has been revealed? There seems to be a premium on verbs like "to make known" and "to reveal" in this section...what is their purpose as relates to man? A: Of all the things that Paul could say about the mystery of Christ, he focuses on a few things: they are revealed by God's grace, and while they once weren't known to anyone (in the manner they now are in Christ), they now are. The focus, then, is that God has been gracious to explain in Christ that all men could be reconciled to him--something that was predicted and hinted at by the prophets of old, but certainly not seen clearly (it was still hidden). Thus, the "revelation" language holds true, that Christ is the turning point, and his appearance ensures that God's plan to bring all men to himself (John 12:32) is ultimately for himself, so that he gets the praise. Why else would Christ have had to come in the way that he did? Why else would God be pleased to use Paul, the least of all the saints, as his instrument of explaining this mystery to many? Q: What is the force of the touto charin in verse 1? Is it looking backward to chapter 2, or is it looking forward, anticipating Paul's prayer starting in verse 14? A: Q: Does the force of the passage land on the very last verse (v13), and if so, is Paul asking that his readers not be discouraged, or is he asking God (as part of the content of his prayer) to keep him from being discouraged and letting his readers understand his heart for them in his afflictions (both emotional and physical)? A:
