Some of the questions and initial answers: Q: Who are the captives? In Psalm 68:18, "he received gifts..." Not so here, where "he gave gifts..." What is the significance of the difference? A: In the LXX, the verb is the aorist participle elabes from lambano meaning "to take, to take hold of, to receive, to get, to obtain". The best way to see this would seem to be saying that Christ gave/obtained gifts to men in the working that he did in saving them, and it also follows (in v11) that he also gave gifts to the church of specific men. Christ receiving gifts from men only happens in the sense that he receives praise for his saving work is procuring a body for himself. Q: What is the meaning of eis andra teleion is verse 13? A: According to Hoehner, the "complete man" in v13 is better understood as "a complete person", which is the church itself (the church is continually growing to be more and more complete in Christ). This seems to fit better than the generic (and plural) anthropos .

Therefore, I, a prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthily of the calling (of) which you have been called
with all humility and gentleness and with patience,
being patient with one another in love,
working hard to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
series
actionmanner
(For there is) one body and one Spirit,
just as you also have been called in the one hope of your calling,
comparison
(and there is) one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
(and there is) one God and Father of all (people),
the one who is over all (things) and through all (things) and in all (things).
ideaexplanation
But to each one of us grace was given
according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Therefore it says, "After ascending into the heavens,
he captured a group of captives
and he gave gifts to men."

But what (does it mean) = is it the "he ascended"
except (to say) that he also descended into the lower places of the earth?
questionanswer
(For) the one who descended himself is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens
in order that he might fulfill all things.

and (on the other) shepherds and teachers,

unto the equipping of the saints for the work of service,
for the strengthening of the body of Christ,
actionresult
until we all should attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God into (a) complete person/man,
(that is,) the measure of the maturity of the fullness of Christ,
situationresponse
in order that we would no longer be immature/infants,
being tossed by the sea and being blown about by every wind of teaching in the cunning of men in craftiness to the trickery of deception,
but speaking the truth in love,
