The main idea from Eph. 4:25-5:2 continues here in this section--Paul commanding specific actions and prohibiting others--but with decidedly different (and distinct) grounds. The focus shifts more from what one should/shouldn't do (the focus of the previous section), which is summed up in being imitators of God, and centers here on the theme of darkness/light. There are six different gar occurrences in this passage, and most of them (three explicitly) with the theme of being light/not being darkness as a ground for why Christians should behave in a certain manner. There seems to be a strong emphasis on the ground of verse 8 ("you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord) leading into the implied action. This, then, is the key that I am taking for the passage which seems to sum it up and be the crux of the argument: "Because you were darkness and now Christ has made you light, therefore you must walk as children of light." Really, the idea of children makes sense here, because a child aspires to follow after and imitate his/her father, which is exactly what Paul was stating in the previous section in Eph 5:1. It would seem to be that these two sections could be in series with each other, since being imitators of God and walking as children of light (since God is light) seem to be two ways of saying the same thing. Interestingly, the ground statement in verse 8 sounds a lot like Paul's arguments from chapter 2 ("you were once dead but now you are alive", and "you were separated as strangers and aliens and far off, but now you have been brought near with the dividing wall being destroyed"). Some questions.... Q: Do verses 3-5 fit better with this segment of verses, or do they fit better as an addition to verses 1-2, and all the way back through 4:25 as well (with the commands of how one should/shouldn't act? Q: How is the quotation in verse 14 serving (as a "therefore" or even as a comparison, or even a ground)? Where does this quotation come from (OT passages, early church hymns)? Q: What is the rationale for referencing a "sleeper" in the v14 quote? There is no mention of sleeping beforehand! Could this be in reference to the light/darkness themes, and how would this be understood in the context of the rest of Ephesians?
