Discourse w/ paraphrase
Isaiah 55:1-5
d “Come, everyone who thirsts,
Come to me all of you with parched throats!
come to the waters;
Make your way to this fountain of living water!
and he who has no money,
Although you have nothing with which to pay,
e come, buy and eat!
I urge you to still come! Make an exchange and be nourished.
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Draw near! I have the finest food, and it can be acquired without monetary means.
f Why do you spend your money
Why are you spending your livelihood
for that which is not bread,
in order to buy something which cannot satisfy your hunger?
and your labor
Again I ask, why are you spending all of your energy
for that which does not satisfy?
in order to obtain things which cannot quench the longings of your soul?
Listen diligently to me,
Pay careful attention to what I am saying:
and eat what is good,
Eat the things which benefit you
and delight yourselves in rich food.
that is , joyfully feast on excellent meals.
Incline your ear,
Be attentive
and come to me;
and draw near to me.
g hear,
Listen to me
that your soul may live;
so that your soul may have life!
h and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
Then I will make you a promise which lasts forever:
i my steadfast, sure love for j David.
the same promise I announced to David out of my faithful love to him.
k Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, l a leader and commander for the peoples.
Look and see how I raised him up to testify to the world of my greatness, and to rule over and subdue nations.
k Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
See this! In the same way , you will testify to foreign peoples you do not recognize
and m a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
and these people will hear your voice and make haste to draw near
because of the Lord your God,
because the only one who can satisfy souls is Yahweh, our God.
and of the Holy One of Israel,
He is the Holy One who rules over his special people.
n for he has glorified you.
All of this will happen because Yahweh has exalted you, O Israel!
