Inspite of our deadness in sin, God saved us in order to show the surpassing riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
j And you were k dead in the trespasses and sins
And you 1 were a dead 2 in your trespasses and sins,
Καὶ ὑμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν,
And although you were 1 dead 2 in your transgressions and sins,
l in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following m the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in n the sons of disobedience—
in which you a formerly walked
ἐν αἷς ποτε περιεπατήσατε κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, κατὰ τὸν ἄρχοντα τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος, τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ νῦν ἐνεργοῦντος ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀπειθείας•
in which 3 you formerly lived 4 according to this world’s present path, 5 according to the ruler of the kingdom 6 of the air, the ruler of 7 the spirit 8 that is now energizing 9 the sons of disobedience, 10
according to the 1 course of b this world,
according to c the prince of the power of the air,
of the spirit that is now working in d the sons of disobedience.
among whom we all once lived in o the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body 1 and the mind, and p were by nature q children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 2
Among them we too all a formerly lived in b the lusts of our flesh,
ἐν οἷς καὶ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἀνεστράφημέν ποτε ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῆς σαρκὸς ἡμῶν ποιοῦντες τὰ θελήματα τῆς σαρκὸς καὶ τῶν διανοιῶν, καὶ ἤμεθα τέκνα φύσει ὀργῆς ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποί•
among whom 11 all of us 12 also 13 formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath 14 even as the rest… 15

But 1 God, being r rich in mercy, s because of the great love with which he loved us,
But God made us alive together with Christ
ὁ δὲ θεὸς πλούσιος ὢν ἐν ἐλέει, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς,
But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us,
being a rich in mercy,
because of b His great love with which He loved us,
even t when we were dead in our trespasses, u made us alive together with Christ— v by grace you have been saved—
even when we were a dead 1 in our transgressions,...
καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ, - χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι -
even though we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you are saved! 16 -

and raised us up with him and w seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

καὶ συνήγειρεν καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ,

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable x riches of his grace in y kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

ἵνα ἐνδείξηται ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσιν τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις τὸ ὑπερβάλλον πλοῦτος τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ ἐν χρηστότητι ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
to demonstrate in the coming ages 17 the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward 18 us in Christ Jesus.
For z by grace you have been saved a through faith. And this is b not your own doing; c it is the gift of God,
For a by grace you have been saved b through faith;
Τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ πίστεως•
For by grace you are saved 19 through faith, 20
and 1 that not of yourselves,
καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν,
and this is not from yourselves,
it is c the gift of God;
θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον•
it is the gift of God;
d not a result of works, e so that no one may boast.
a not as a result of works,
οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται.
it is not from 21 works, so that no one can boast. 22
so that b no one may boast.
For f we are his workmanship, g created in Christ Jesus h for good works, i which God prepared beforehand, j that we should walk in them.

αὐτοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν ποίημα, κτισθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐπὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς οἷς προητοίμασεν ὁ θεός, ἵνα ἐν αὐτοῖς περιπατήσωμεν.
For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them. 23
