Notes
As people who are living in this side of the history of redemption, people under the new covenant, we are no longer commanded to make sacrifices in the temple or follow strict purification laws so that we might become clean, because all of these were accomplished by Christ on the cross for his people. And when He who is clean, namely the Lord Jesus Christ, touched us, we are made clean. However, God did provide some means for the sanctification of his people this side of the cross, namely the word of God, prayer, and fellowship in the context of a local body, communion. But these means of sanctification find their efficacy not in themselves but on Christ's work. In other words, unbelieving people, those who are not yet cleansed by the blood of Christ, they can do all of these things and still be defiled. Until a person is changed from the inside out, all of his works are contaminated by sin. Or as Paul said in Romans 14:23, anything that is not of faith is sin. Alternatively, for those who are cleansed, despite of our remaining sins, these means of grace can really sanctify us. But we hope not in the labor of our hands nor on our imperfect sacrifices but on God's blessing, which our foundation day, the cross, already guaranteed.
