Discourse 2:10-19
Haggai 2:10-19
t On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, u in the second year of Darius,
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius’ second year, 16
On the a twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius,
the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet,
the Lord spoke again to the prophet Haggai: 17
the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
“Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“The Lord who rules over all says,
“Thus says the Lord of hosts,
v Ask the priests about the law:
‘Ask the priests about the law. 18
‘ a Ask now the priests for a 1 ruling:
‘If someone carries w holy meat in the fold of his garment
If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment
If a man carries a holy meat in the 1 fold of his garment,
and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food,
and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food,
and touches bread with 2 this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food,
does it become holy?’”
will that item become holy?’” 19
will it become holy?’”
The priests answered and said,
The priests answered,
And the priests answered,
x “No.”
“It will not.”
Then Haggai said,
Then Haggai asked,
Then Haggai said,
y “If someone who is unclean
“If a person who is ritually unclean
“ a If one who is unclean
by contact with a dead body z touches any of these,
because of touching a dead body 20 comes in contact with one of these items,
from a 1 corpse touches any of these,
does it become unclean?”
will it become unclean?”
will the latter become unclean?”
The priests answered and said,
The priests answered,
And the priests answered,
“It does become unclean.”
“It will be unclean.”
“It will become unclean.”
Then Haggai answered and said,
Then Haggai responded,
Then Haggai said, “
a “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the Lord ,
“‘The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,’ 21 says the Lord .
‘ a So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the Lord ,
and so with every work of their hands.
‘And so is all their effort;
‘and so is every work of their hands;
And what they offer there is unclean.
everything they offer is also unclean. 22
and what they offer there is unclean.
Now then, b consider from this day onward. 1
Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past, 23
But now, do 1 a consider from this day 2 onward:
Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord ,
before one stone was laid on another in the Lord ’s temple. 24
before one b stone was placed on another in the temple of the Lord ,
how did you fare?
From that time 25
1 from that time
c When 1 one came to a heap of twenty measures,
when one came expecting a heap of twenty measures,
when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures,
there were but ten.
there were only ten;
there would be only ten;
When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures,
when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures from it,
and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty 2 measures,
there were but twenty.
there were only twenty.
there would be only twenty.
d I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail,
I struck all the products of your labor 26 with blight, disease, and hail,
I smote you and every work of your hands with a blasting wind, mildew and hail;
e yet you did not turn to me,
and yet you brought nothing to me,’ 27
1 yet you did not come back to Me,’
declares the Lord .
says the Lord .
declares the Lord .
b Consider
‘Think carefully about the past: 28
‘Do 1 a consider
from this day onward,
from today,
from this day 2 onward,
f from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month.
the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, 29
from the b twenty-fourth day of the ninth month;
Since g the day that the foundation of the Lord ’s temple was laid,
to the day work on the temple of the Lord was resumed, 30
from the day when the temple of the Lord was c founded,
b consider:
think about it. 31
1 consider:
h Is the seed yet in the barn?
The seed is still in the storehouse, isn’t it?
Is the seed still in the barn?
Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing.
And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced.
Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit.
But from this day on i I will bless you.”
Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.’”
Yet from this day on I will a bless you. ’”

III. Hope of Blessings Despite of Disobedience(2:10–19) A. Date, Introduction, and Addressee (2:10-11) B. The Problem: Defiled People (2:10–19) Two Rulings from the Priests (2:11–13) The Rulings Applied to the Nation (2:14) C. Conclusion: Consider Two Things(2:15–18) The curse in the past that results from you defilement (2:15–19) The blessing now and in the future because of God's grace despite of your defilement(2:19)
As people who are living in this side of the history of redemption, people under the new covenant, we are no longer commanded to make sacrifices in the temple or follow strict purification laws so that we might become clean, because all of these were accomplished by Christ on the cross for his people. And when He who is clean, namely the Lord Jesus Christ, touched us, we are made clean. However, God did provide some means for the sanctification of his people this side of the cross, namely the word of God, prayer, and fellowship in the context of a local body, communion. But these means of sanctification find their efficacy not in themselves but on Christ's work. In other words, unbelieving people, those who are not yet cleansed by the blood of Christ, they can do all of these things and still be defiled. Until a person is changed from the inside out, all of his works are contaminated by sin. Or as Paul said in Romans 14:23, anything that is not of faith is sin. Alternatively, for those who are cleansed, despite of our remaining sins, these means of grace can really sanctify us. But we hope not in the labor of our hands nor on our imperfect sacrifices but on God's blessing, which our foundation day, the cross, already guaranteed.
