Joy, Prayer and Sanctification

The joy of praying for the sanctification of other Christians is rooted on God's ability to finish what he started. If you want to have joy, then pray for the spiritual growth of other believers. The means by which God sanctifies a person is not only through the preaching of the word but also through the community of Christians praying for one another.

All means everything that paul can remember whether good or bad about his experience at philippi

always in every prayer of mine for you all

πάντοτε ἐν πάσῃ δεήσει μου ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν,

I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you

πάντοτε ἐν πάσῃ δεήσει μου ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν, μετὰ χαρᾶς τὴν δέησιν ποιούμενος,

Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

he prays for them

making my prayer with joy,

μετὰ χαρᾶς τὴν δέησιν ποιούμενος,

in a joyful manner

ἐπὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ἀπὸ ⸀ τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν,

For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

Philippian's consistency on their partnership in the gospel is the reason why he thank God and intercedes for them with joy

And I am sure of this,

πεποιθὼς αὐτὸ τοῦτο,

For I am sure of this very thing, 9 that the one 10 who began a good work in 11 you will perfect it 12 until the day of Christ Jesus.

πεποιθὼς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ὅτι ὁ ἐναρξάμενος ἐν ὑμῖν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐπιτελέσει ἄχρι ἡμέρας ⸂ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ ⸃ ·

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

ultimately his confidence does not lie on what they can do

that he who began h a good work in you i will bring it to completion at j the day of Jesus Christ.

ὅτι ὁ ἐναρξάμενος ἐν ὑμῖν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐπιτελέσει ἄχρι ἡμέρας Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ•

but on Christ's ability to fulfill his promise of salvation. See Romans 8:29-30

It is right for me to feel this way about you all,

Καθώς ἐστιν δίκαιον ἐμοὶ τοῦτο φρονεῖν ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν

For 13 it is right for me to think this about all of you, because I have you in my heart, 14 since both in my imprisonment 15 and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel all of you became partners in God’s grace 16 together with me.

καθώς ἐστιν δίκαιον ἐμοὶ τοῦτο φρονεῖν ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν, διὰ τὸ ἔχειν με ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμᾶς, ἔν τε τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀπολογίᾳ καὶ βεβαιώσει τοῦ εὐαγγελίου συγκοινωνούς μου τῆς χάριτος πάντας ὑμᾶς ὄντας·

Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

paul explains further why he felt this way

because I hold you k in my heart,

διὰ τὸ ἔχειν με ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμᾶς,

First because it flows naturally from his heart

for you are all l partakers with me of grace, 1

ἔν τε τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου

because they share the same grace

both m in my imprisonment

καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀπολογίᾳ

grace as he experience in his imprisonment

and in n the defense

καὶ βεβαιώσει τοῦ εὐαγγελίου

and grace in the defense of the gospel

and confirmation of the gospel.

συγκοινωνούς μου τῆς χάριτος πάντας ὑμᾶς ὄντας.

For God is my witness that I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

μάρτυς γάρ ⸀ μου ὁ θεός, ὡς ἐπιποθῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ἐν σπλάγχνοις ⸂ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ ⸃ .

For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

paul here appeals to God since only God knows the heart

with the affection of Christ Jesus.

ἐν σπλάγχνοις Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ.

Καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι,

And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight

καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ ἐν ἐπιγνώσει καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει,

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

Paul prays

that q your love may abound more and more,

ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ

for their ongoing sanctification that yields to love

ἐν ἐπιγνώσει

not with blind love

and all discernment,

καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει

And not without discerment

so that you may approve what is excellent,

εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τὰ διαφέροντα,

so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ,

εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τὰ διαφέροντα, ἵνα ἦτε εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ,

That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

by means of our union with Christ or by Christ
