Main point summary
Paul starts by thanking God and ends with a worship doxology that centers on the truth of his salvation and appointment to ministry. Although he was a great sinner and didn't deserve it, Paul experienced salvation because he acted in unbelief, (therefore was not of those who believed and fell away), and because God intended him to be an example of great patience and mercy. If God would save the chief of sinners, he can save anyone. Therefore he is worthy of praise.
1 Timothy 1:12-17
I thank him x who has given me strength,
Christ Jesus our Lord,
because he judged me faithful,
y appointing me to his service,
though formerly I was a blasphemer,
and insolent opponent.
But a I received mercy
b because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
and c the grace of our Lord overflowed for me
with the d faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
The saying is e trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus f came into the world
to save sinners,
g of whom I am the foremost.
But I received mercy for this reason,
that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience
as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
To h the King of the ages,
k the only God,
l be honor and glory forever and ever. 1 Amen.
