1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Now concerning w the times and the seasons, brothers, 1
Now let's talk about what time we are living in, brothers
x you have no need to have anything written to you.
even though you already know this very well.
For you yourselves are fully aware
For you know already know this well,
that y the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
that the Lord Jesus is going to return unexpectedly for some people.
While people are saying, “There is peace and security,”
While some are living in comfort saying, "Ahhh, what peace and security we have!"
then z sudden destruction will come upon them
suddenly, they will be destroyed.
a as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,
just as labor pains suddenly appear for a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape.
and these people, who loved their peace and security, will not escape being destroyed.
But you b are not in darkness, brothers,
But when it comes to you, brothers, you are not like these people who are in darkness,
for that day to surprise you like a thief.
for you will not be surprised by the day of the Lord!
For you are all c children 1 of light,
This is because you are children of light
children of the day.
(and) children of the day.
We are not of the night
Again , we are not children of the night
or of the darkness.
Nor are we children of the darkness.
So then d let us not sleep, as others do,
So then we will not be unaware, as others are,
but let us e keep awake
But let us stay alert and aware,
and f be sober.
and stay sober in every respect.
For those who sleep, sleep at night,
For those who sleep, do so during the night
and those who get drunk, g are drunk at night.
And those who become drunk, do this during the night.
But since we belong to the day,
But since we belong to the day, as children of the day,
let us be sober,
then let us stay sober and ready in our hearts and minds,
h having put on the breastplate of i faith and love,
by putting on the armor of God: for a breastplate, both faith and love,
and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
and for a helmet, the hope of our salvation.
For God has not destined us for j wrath,
For we are not destined for wrath, brothers!
but k to obtain salvation
Instead , we are now destined for salvation!
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
This salvation comes through our Lord Jesus Christ
l who died for us
who died for us
so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.
so that whether we are still alive or have fallen asleep for a short time, we are still alive with God.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
T herefore , continue and don't stop encouraging and building one another up until Jesus returns!
Notes: -commands highlighted in green -means in blue -motivations in orange -anchors in purple -two times we see the same command with almost the same explanation for the command: command: be sober reason: because we are "children of light" OR because "we belong to the day" .. which seems synonymous. I intitially thought the main point was the last line, but as I went through the whole passage, it seems the command to "stay sober" is a stronger theme here. I ended up including both of these commands in the main point, trying to keep it concise. Not sure if I should have just stuck with one sentence. ========= Meditations: 1. I think most of us want "peace and security" so it's interesting to think about the ramifications of maybe loving these things too much? Or maybe these things are equated with loving one's life more than loving God. The main thing Paul is saying is that these people are in darkness ... unaware or maybe uninterested in knowing and seeking God ... unaware that Jesus is returning. This is in contrast to those who ARE aware or awake to the fact that Jesus is returning and are waiting and watching for that return. I think when we become aware, as Christians, of Jesus' return, it can become kind of a "well duh" thing to us. But going through this passage is reminding me that many people are very unprepared for the coming of the Lord and that's a really sad thing. Maybe I need to start kindly speaking up more ....
