Spiritual Gifts and the Church

God's command is this: 1) exercise the spiritual gifts for the benefit of the whole church, and 2) exercise such gifts selflessly, with integrity, and in orderly peace. For example, for those who are to speak in tongues in the public assembly, speak in succession and with an interpreter so that all may be encouraged. For those who are to prophesy, speak one by one realizing that each revelation is from the Holy Spirit to help and not to harm the congregation, for God seeks to unify his people. When there is prophesy, judge what is said, and women submit in silence to the critique of the elders. Your submission is affirmed by the similar practice of all the other churches, and furthermore, it is something prescribed in creation order itself. Should you desire to inquire further about a prophesy, inquire of it with your husband at home, where he can lead, teach and sanctify you as you ask.

Brothers [and sisters] , what then is to become of these gifts?

When you come together,

and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.

AND that encouragement extends to other prophesiers and their learning from those who prophesy - all are led by the Holy Spirit to prophesy to help the congregation.

WHAT I MEAN TO SAY IS, women should not over speak (be quiet aside from praying and prophesying - Ch. 11)

For they are not permitted to speak,

If there is anything they desire to learn,

INSTEAD, IF they want to learn/critique a prophesy

let them ask their husbands at home.

THEN let them ask and learn at home

For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

BECAUSE she isn't to exercise the office of an elder at church

Or was it from you that the word of God came?

OR do you go against the churches of the saints and the law, as if you were the one to whom God directly gave the instructions?

Or are you the only ones it has reached?

AND are you distinct from all other churches and from the law?

c If anyone thinks that he is a prophet,

IF anyone thinks they have a word to share

or spiritual,

OR if anyone is receiving from the Holy Spirit

he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord.

THEN acknowledge that this command is from God

If anyone does not recognize this,

HOWEVER, IF you do not acknowledge that the command is from God

he is not recognized.

THEN you are not truly one with the body/prophets

So, my brothers, d earnestly desire to prophesy,

THEREFORE, desire to prophesy (earnestly)

and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

AND permit tongues in church

e But all things should be done decently

BUT do it with integrity

IN OTHER WORDS, do it in order

Prophesying and praying are not teaching or exercising authority. Women not being able to weigh prophesies = a part of teaching or governing, which is prohibited in 1 Tim 2:10-12
