A Brief Synopsis 7a seems to be the ground for these four verses. It is becuase of this testing, or trials, that they are grieved--but it will not be in vain, for Peter tells them plainly it is so that their faith will be found to result in three things--praise, glory, and honor! It is not becuase of the believer, however, that these things belong. Their faith belongs entirely to God in Christ as stated in v.2: "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood ." The praise belongs to Christ because He has chosen us from the foundation of the world without regard to our works(Eph 1:4, Ro 9:16) The honor belongs to Christ because He is esteemed above all creation (Php 1:11, Col 1:16-17) The glory belongs to Christ because He is all glorious in His atoning work to save redeem those without hope (Ro 5:8, Joh 10:14-18) Bridging the Gap The apostle Paul told the disciples in Lystra and Iconium, "through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22). The only way for a Christian to enter into God's Kingdom is to, as these beleivers that Peter was writing to, be grieved for a little while. James reminds us to be joyful in our trials (Jas 1:2) and that these trials produce in us completeness (Jas 1:3-4). Christian, you are being grieved at this time, yet take hope that this is not to be your permenant lot. God has prepared this time to perfect your faith so that it may be found ready to praise Him, honor Him, and bring Him the greatest glory.
