The beginning of the gospel of Mark describes how John the Baptist appeared, fulfilling the prophecies about him in the Old Testament by preparing the way for the LORD, preaching in the wilderness a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. John was preparing the way for the LORD in the hearts of the repentant sinners in two ways: 1. By preaching repentance. There were many who were confessing their sins and getting baptized with water, 2. Yet John made it clear that one mightier than him (Jesus) was coming after him, who would baptize them with the Holy Spirit.
