12 u Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive v the crown of life, w which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire x when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and y sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Notes
When James charges the Church to "Count it all joy... when you meet trials of various kinds", he roots this command in God's promise of life "to those who love him" and in his character which "tempts no one" and gives us "every perfect gift" that we receive. In short, James is calling on the faithful to have faith in our God. This is reinforced throughout chapter 1 of James' epistle as he calls on the lowly saints to boast in their exaltation (v.9) which is an oft-repeated promise of Jesus (Matt 23:12) and a call to remember who they are in the gospel, as well as charging them to ask for wisdom in faith through their trials. To what promise of God is James referring? The only other time (to my knowledge) the phrase "crown of life" is used in scripture is Revelation 2:10, when Jesus is promising the "crown of life" to those in Smyrna who remain "faithful unto death". The correlation here is clear to a church in the throws of trial and suffering. However, the promise of life hearkens back to Deuteronomy 30, which sees Moses setting before Israel "life and good, death and evil." (v.15) Life is promised for those who render love and obedience to God, death for those who worship idols (there are no in-betweens). However, in any scenario, what is set before us is life and death. It is imperative that we understand the stakes, because as James says in 1:16, we should not be deceived as to the nature of God's promises or his character. Therefore, what James is encouraging the Church to do is to do exactly that which opposes the original sin committed in Eden, namely to trust in God's promises and his character, especially when we are faced with suffering.

Ἰάκωβος θεοῦ καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος ταῖς δώδεκα φυλαῖς ταῖς ἐν τῇ διασπορᾷ χαίρειν.
e Count it all joy, my brothers, 1 when you meet trials f of various kinds, for you know that g the testing of your faith h produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be i perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Rejoice in trials for it is God's method of restoring his perfect image in you.

Do this by asking God for wisdom in faith.
Εἰ δέ τις ὑμῶν λείπεται σοφίας, αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ ⸀ μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος, καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ· αἰτείτω δὲ ἐν πίστει, μηδὲν διακρινόμενος, ὁ γὰρ διακρινόμενος ἔοικεν κλύδωνι θαλάσσης ἀνεμιζομένῳ καὶ ῥιπιζομένῳ· μὴ γὰρ οἰέσθω ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ὅτι λήμψεταί τι παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἀνὴρ δίψυχος, ἀκατάστατος ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ.
Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and r the rich in his humiliation, because s like a flower of the grass 1 he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and t withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
And by remembering 1) our exaltation in humility [Matt 23:12] and 2) that the comforts of this world - and those who trust in them - will perish.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. z Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from a the Father of lights b with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 1 c Of his own will he d brought us forth by the word of truth, e that we should be a kind of f firstfruits of his creatures.
Therefore , do not believe the lie that God is not good, because he is the source of all that is good, he is eternal, and he specially created us to radiate his glory.
μὴ πλανᾶσθε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί. Πᾶσα δόσις ἀγαθὴ καὶ πᾶν δώρημα τέλειον ἄνωθέν ἐστιν, καταβαῖνον ἀπὸ τοῦ πατρὸς τῶν φώτων, παρ’ ᾧ οὐκ ἔνι παραλλαγὴ ἢ τροπῆς ἀποσκίασμα. βουληθεὶς ἀπεκύησεν ἡμᾶς λόγῳ ἀληθείας, εἰς τὸ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἀπαρχήν τινα τῶν αὐτοῦ κτισμάτων.
g Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person h be quick to hear, i slow to speak, j slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore k put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with l meekness the implanted word, m which is able to save your souls.
But instead, humble yourselves by refusing to attain to righteousness through anger
⸀ Ἴστε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί. ἔστω ⸀ δὲ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ταχὺς εἰς τὸ ἀκοῦσαι, βραδὺς εἰς τὸ λαλῆσαι, βραδὺς εἰς ὀργήν, ὀργὴ γὰρ ἀνδρὸς δικαιοσύνην θεοῦ ⸂ οὐκ ἐργάζεται ⸃ . διὸ ἀποθέμενοι πᾶσαν ῥυπαρίαν καὶ περισσείαν κακίας ἐν πραΰτητι δέξασθε τὸν ἔμφυτον λόγον τὸν δυνάμενον σῶσαι τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν.
But be n doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, o the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, p he will be blessed in his doing.
And live according to the word of God and receive his blessing instead of deceiving yourselves about your righteousness apart from God's law, for the law of God is a mirror to show us our true selves before God.

If anyone thinks he is religious q and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s r religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction, and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
Therefore, while religion is used by the worldly to deceive themselves into thinking they are righteous, true religion, which is religion that God has decreed, is that which humbles a person to serve the humbled and transforms the person into that which is holy.
