Philippians 2:1-11
Unity Through Self-Humiliation
Unity Through Self-Humiliation
Now, make my joy complete, for
is there any comfort in Christ?
Is there any uplifting love?
Is there any solidarity in God’s Spirit?
Is there any compassion and care?
If so, you should be united in thought!
This means sharing the same solicitude,
stitched together as a single soul,
setting your minds on a singular goal,
not according to selfishness
nor according to self-satisfying glory-seeking,
but considering one another greater than yourselves
with humble hearts,
which means each of you not looking out for your own interests,
but each one looking out for those of others.
Unite your thought around this idea,
Christ's Self-Humiliation and God's Exaltation
Christ's Self-Humiliation and God's Exaltation
which was exemplified by Christ Jesus,
who || thought || little of his God-equality,
because he shared God’s identity,
but of his own glory || himself made empty ||
through taking a slave’s identity,
through taking on mankind’s likeness,
καὶ || ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν ||
and || humbled himself ||
submitting to man’s great distress,
obeying to the point of death,
on the cross his final breath.
διὸ
Therefore
God has both highly exalted him
and graciously granted to him the name which is above every name,
so that every knee will bow,
all those in heaven and in the earth and under the earth,
at the name of Christ
and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
resulting in God the Father’s glory.
