Imitate God and Walk in Love
Therefore be imitators of God,
HEAD / Generic Command
as beloved children.
Ground
And walk in love,
HEAD/ Generic Command
as Christ loved us
Idea
and gave himself up for us,
Comparison
a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Amplification
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you,
Specific Negative Command
as is proper among saints.
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking,
Specific Negative Command
which are out of place,
but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Alternative Specific Positive Command
For you may be sure of this,
Comment
that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous ( that is, an idolater),
Warning
has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Consequence
Let no one deceive you with empty words,
Specific Negative Command
for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Walk in the Light
Therefore do not become partners with them;
Specific Negative Command
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of light
HEAD / Generic Command
(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),
Explanation
and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
Specific Positive Command
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness,
Negative / Positive Command
but instead expose them.
For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.
But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,
Action / Result
for anything that becomes visible is light.
Therefore it says,
Orienter
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Applications for Ephesians 5:1-14 Paul said that Christians need to imitate God, walk in love as Christ did and live in the Light (Eph. 5:1-14). When God's people obey His Word, they live sanctified lives filled with good works that glorify His name and lead people to Christ. Flee from immorality . Inappropriate sexuality should neither be practiced nor entertained in conversations by Jesus' disciples (Eph. 5:3). Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19), and as such, they need to be kept clean for the Lord. Sex is a gift from God, but it is a wedding gift. We must repent from all forms of improper sexuality and turn to God. Leave greed behind . Paul rightly classified greed as idolatry (Eph. 5:5). The unhealthy desire to accumulate earthly possessions cannot coexist with a sanctified life (Matt. 6:24). We need to trust God's provision for our lives and practice generosity by sharing with those in need (1 Tim. 6:17-19). Sanctify your conversations . Obscene conversations, gossip chatter, and immoral jokes have a corruptive force and ruin good morals (Eph. 5:3-4, 1 Cor. 15:33). That is why Paul says, "instead let there be thanksgiving" (Eph. 5:4). We develop a thankful heart by intentionally turning our attention to what the Lord has done for us. Produce fruits of righteousness. Our thoughts, words, and actions should reflect "all that is good and right and true" (Eph. 5:9). Good works do not save us, but everyone truly saved practices them (Eph. 2:8-10). We are called to notice the needs of others and meet them with love. Stand your ground against sin. Though sin may tempt us, Paul warns that we should "take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness" (Eph. 5:11). Sin is a destructive force with catastrophic consequences (Rom. 6:23). Let your light shine . When we walk in holiness, the light of Christ in us exposes the sin in the world, and "it becomes visible" (Eph. 5:11b,13). This exposition of the deeds of darkness does not mean we shame people, but that the Holy Spirit will convict them of sinfulness by showing that a sanctified way of life is possible; in turn, they can be enlightened by Christ and experience salvation (5:14). Our Christian testimony is a powerful evangelistic tool.
